JUDO EBONIZED OCCASIONAL TABLE
The Judo Table was a piece made in collaboration with Sam Dwyer. Sam and I have worked on several bespoke pieces together. He understands the language of sculptural furniture and the way the body interacts with furniture. In an early conversation, we discussed the way you interact with a coffee table—often kicking your feet up. The great importance of a smooth edge and plenty of surface space to use—not just decorate. We started with a concept sketch loosely depicting the many facets the top could have interesting angles to interact with. The base was to be divided into two—feeling like the narrow slot canyons in Utah you stand within and feel so small. Sam cut away with a chainsaw to create the loose shape we first had in mind. We then fit the rough-cut top to the two bottom pieces to find the balance between the two.
